Buffs derail Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters

HARROGATE -- The Milligan College baseball team went on the road and defeated NCAA Division II Lincoln Memorial University by the score of 5-4 Wednesday evening.
   The win improved the Buffaloes to 14-9 while LMU drops to 9-14-1.
   Milligan took a one-run lead over the Railsplitters in the fourth inning. With one out, junior third baseman Dustin Price reached second with a double, followed by an RBI single from junior second baseman Nathan Meade.
   Lincoln Memorial would answer the Buffs in the bottom of the fourth. Jim Wernke led off the inning with a single and Wes Strader moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Johnson Whitehead scored Wernke with a double.
   LMU added two more runs in the fifth inning. Matt O'Brian led off the inning with a single. After two straight fly ball outs by Cory Bennett and Patrick Bolton, Wernke walked. Both O'Brian and Wernke scored on Strader's double.
   The Buffs chipped away at the deficit in the sixth inning. With one out, sophomore center fielder Will Little started a rally with a single followed by a Price single to move Little to third. With runners on the corner, Meade drove Little in with a sacrifice fly to center field.
   Milligan scored another run in the eighth inning as junior Jacob McAllister was hit by a pitch and Little reached first as the first baseman dropped the throw from third base. Price singled to load the bases for Meade, as Meade brought McAllister around to score on an error by the Railsplitters' second baseman.
   In the top of the ninth, the Buffs tied the game, and took the lead. The inning was led off as freshman left fielder Ben Huff reached first on an error followed by senior first baseman Brian Miller reaching first as the LMU pitcher could not field the attempted sacrifice bunt.
   Senior short stop Brad Hitch followed that with a walk to load the bases. Freshman catcher Thomas Lister scored pinch runner Cody Whitlock with a base hit. Hitch would score on a wild pitch from reliever Matt Howard.
   Freshman Ryan Connor picked up the win on the mound for Milligan. He pitched three innings, not allowing a run and only one hit. For LMU in the lost, Matt Howard as he went one inning, giving up one hit but two runs, one of which was earned.
   At the plate for the Buffaloes, Dustin Price went 3 for 4 and scored one run, and Nathan Meade was 1 for 4 with two RBIs.
   Next for the Buffs is a three game Appalachian Athletic Conference series with Montreat (N.C.) at Milligan College's Anglin Field. Saturday's double header starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game starts at 2 p.m.
