Milligan dominates diamonds

   The Milligan College baseball team had a good handle on things Thursday afternoon at Anglin Field, where the Buffaloes defeated Bluefield College 7-5 and 12-2 in an Appalachian Conference doubleheader.
   The first game saw Milligan (4-0, 7-12) get two doubles and three RBIs from catcher David Hilton, while Scott Shealy picked up a hit to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
   Dustin Barrett twirled his third complete game of the season, evening his record at 2-2. Barrett, who scattered 11 hits over seven innings to pick up the win, struck out six and walked two.
   Ben Whittemore added three runs and a triple to help pace the Buffaloes to an important conference win.
   In game two, junior righthander Brad Zachritz (2-2) pitched a five-inning complete game to slow down the Rams. He allowed only two runs on four hits while striking out two.
   The Buff offense exploded by scoring 10 runs in the first three innings, then coasting to victory.
   Senior Chris Archer (Knoxville) led the Buffs with two hits in four at-bats, knocking in one run and scoring two.
   Whittemore made his presence felt once again, adding a pair of hits and two RBIs.
   Shealy went 1-for-1, reaching base three times and driving in a pair of runs while pushing his hit streak to 17 games.
   Milligan will host Hilbert College (N.Y.) for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today. Chris Gambill and Chris Shockley are scheduled to start on the mound for the Buffs.
   Bluefield returns to Anglin Field on Saturday to conclude its three-game series with Milligan. The game starts at 1 p.m.
  
Lady Buffs sweep


   The start of conference play perked up the Lady Buffaloes, who put away Brevard 11-6 and 5-3 on Thursday afternoon.
   Ashley Fine returned to her form from last year in game 1, scattering 10 hits and picking up her first win of the season.
   Carissa Ellis was tops offensively for the Lady Buffs, collecting two hits. Ellis tagged a three-run homer in the fifth to break open a 3-0 game, and she scored in all four of her at-bats.
   Andrea Henriott contributed two singles in four trips to the plate.
   Milligan fell behind 3-0 early in the second game, but retaliated with a total of five runs in the third and fourth innings.
   Brandy Waddle tossed a three-hit complete game to even her record at 2-2. She helped herself with the stick, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
   Bristol's Alyson Bowman had a clutch hit for the Lady Buffs, driving in the first two Milligan runs.
   The Lady Buffs host Bluefield on Saturday at 1 p.m.
