Jenkins, Cornett advance from staff reportsCHATTANOOGA--The Elizabethton Cyclones enjoyed a measure of success on the day of the Division I state wrestling tournament Thursday as Patrick Jenkins and Mitch Cornett both walked off the mats with first-round wins. Jenkins, wrestling in the 145-pound class, proved to be too much for Ooltewah's Michael Brooks, claiming a 14-8 decision. As for Cornett (152), he came through with a 13-5 majority decision of Hixson's Ben Barney. Three other Cyclones -- John Ross, Tyler Ross and Zack Potter -- competed on Wednesday, with John (125) dropping a tough 9-7 decision to Farragut's Paul Mountain. Tyler (112) succumbed to Michael Hammond of Collierville by technical fall in 3:35, while Potter (189) was pinned by Raven's Logan Spencer in 3:35. Jenkins will grapple with Bearden's Aaron O'Hern in today's round of 16, while Cornett takes on Farragut's Chad Turner. O'Hern decisioned Rossview's George DeJesus 6-3 while Turner defeated George Alston of Northwest by pinfall (5:29) during yesterday's action.
