Lady Buffs split first two games of season

GREENEVILLE, TN -- The Milligan College Lady Buffs softball team opened the 2004 spring season with a split at NCAA Division II Tusculum College by the scores of 3-2 and 0-7.
The Lady Buffs started the spring with a victory behind a strong pitching performance by junior Traci Harrison, who went six innings, giving up two runs and eight hits. Harrison had the victory while junior Brandy Waddle came in and pitched the seventh inning for the save. Natasha Lindsey picked up the loss to go to 0-2. Lindsey went 6.1 innings, giving up all three earned runs along with eight innings.
Milligan won the first game behind clutch hitting from sophomore outfielder Rebecca Gilley, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs; also going 2-for-3 was freshman third baseman Megan Aldridge, with one RBI and one scored run.
For Tusculum, third baseman Jeannie Keebler and outfielder Jessica Taylor each went 1-for-3 and scored a run.
Tusculum opened up an early two run lead behind two straight RBI ground outs by Laura Menchaca and Brie Griffin in the first inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Milligan charged back behind back-to-back doubles from freshman catcher Ashley Mashburn and Aldridge to cut the lead to 2-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Gilley stepped up with two runners on base and drove both in on a double to give Milligan a 3-2 lead.
In the second game, the game was scoreless for the first three innings. Tusculum jumped ahead with two runs from a Griffin home run in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, Griffin had two more RBIs with a double-scoring Keebler and Menchaca as part of a four run inning. The Lady Pioneers added another run in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
The winning pitcher in game two was Laura Williams (1-1), going seven innings and allowing only one hit while Waddle receives the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.
The next game for Milligan will be at Anglin Field next Wednesday against Lees-McRae (NC), starting at 2 p.m.
