Buffs sweep past VI

The Milligan baseball team opened its Appalachian
Athletic Conference schedule with two victories over Virginia
Intermont on Monday afternoon, take the first game 3-2 in
10 innings, then winning 9-3.
Dustin Price hit a two-out double to right center
to score Scott Shealy from second base to propel Milligan
(5-1) to the extra-inning victory in game 1.
Price finished the game going 3 for 5 with a
run scored. Freshman David Rusaw and Ben Whittemore had two
hits apiece for the Buffs.
VI tied the game in the top of seventh when Randy
Hutchens knocked in Tres Pigg with a solid single to leftfield.
Pigg opened the inning with a single up the middle off starting
pitcher Dustin Barrett.
Barrett worked into the seventh, inning scattering
nine hits. He allowed two runs while striking out four batters.
Matt Simmons worked 3.2 innings and allowed three
hits in picking up the win for the Buffs. He is 2-0 on the
season.
Game 2
Milligan scored six times in the second inning
to break up a 1-1 tie. The inning was capped off by a three-run
double by Whittemore, who finished the second game with two
hits and four RBIs.
Jesse Dannemiller went 3 for 3 with a RBI and
a run scored.
Tres Pigg led the Cobras with two-run double
in the third inning to pull the score to 7-3. That was the
closest the Cobras could get.
Chad Davis (1-0) pitched the final four innings
to pick up the win for the Buffs. He didn't allow a hit, walked
two and struck out four in four innings.
Brad Zachritz pitched the first three innings
allowing three runs on five hits.
Milligan will travel to USC-Aiken to play today
and Wednesday. Aiken was ranked No. 6 in the country in Division
II in its preseason poll.
