"Big Redd" will don the orange and blue.
As reported last night on several recruiting websites such as Rivals.com and Borderwars.com, Elizabethton linebacker and tight end Vince Redd has verbally committed to the University of Virginia Cavaliers.
The 6-7, 260-pound senior has been listed as one of the top strongside defensive ends in the nation coming out of high school.
The four-star player not only gets to participate in football, but will also get a chance to excel on the hardwood.
"It's been real exciting," said Redd's mother, Valerie. "We're real proud of the kids. Every parent wants to see their kids do well."
"We weren't expecting it to be as upbeat as it was," she said of the recruiting process. "Those guys know what they want in their players. A lot of good schools wanted him and we couldn't ask for more. I told him he was fortunate and blessed."
Vince really enjoyed his visit to Charlottesville last fall, according to his mother, and spoke to Cavalier head football coach Al Groh last night after he made his decision.
"Al Groh called and talked to him earlier," she said. "They have surprised us. They are real excited about him coming."
Redd totaled more than 100 tackles in each of the past two seasons while earning TSWA 4-A All-State honors in both campaigns. He was selected to the second-team of all divisions on the Associated Press team.
Vince caught 21 passes for 310 yards and four scores at tight end, returned a kick, as well as two fumbles, for touchdowns.
Redd was one of 40 at his position selected for consideration in the U.S. Army high school classic and was awarded the East Tennessee Player of the Year by the Lawrenceburg Quarterback club.
He has averaged around 15 points per game this season for the Cyclones on the basketball court, where he earned MVP honors in the Watauga Conference last season.
An all-state honorable mention in basketball, Redd earned the MVP of the Highlands Classic tourney earlier this year and was honored at the Arby's Classic.
Redd will sign on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Elizabethton High School with Walter Brown, who is leaning towards ETSU at this point for his football career.
