GREENEVILLE -- It was quite a meet for the Elizabethton High
swimming team Monday. New school records tend to make things
a bit special.
On a night that Danielle Maughon, Sarah Burgoyne, Ruth Ann
Johnson and Sarah Key broke the EHS 200 freestyle record,
the Lady Cyclones swam to a 125-125 tie while the Cyclones
prevailed by a 108-88 score versus Greeneville.
Taking second-place honors in the event, Maughon, Burgoyne,
Johnson and Key clocked in at a time of 2:05.03, beating the
old mark by a whopping two seconds.
Leading the Cyclones in their victory was Craig Shaw, who
took top honors in the 100 freestyle (59.07) and the 100 backstroke
(1:09.23).
Garrett Johnson, with a 26.62 in the 50 freestyle, and Blake
Dugger, 1:07.72 in the 100 butterfly, contributed first-place
performances to the 'Betsy cause, and Johnson was one spot
behind Shaw in the 100 freestyle (1:02.00).
Evan Lindauer generated second-place swims in the 200 individual
medley (2:28.16) and 400/500 freestyle (6:13.60), while Matt
Bowers, who posted a 1:15.48 in the 100 breaststroke, and
Eric Crowe, who recorded a 2:31.74 in the 200 freestyle, each
had a runner-up showing.
Moreover, Johnson, Crowe, Dugger and Lindauer served up a
first-place swim in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.12).
Jacob May, Forrest Gentry, Shaw and Johnson grabbed second-place
points in the 200 medley, swimming a 2:33.85.
The Lady Cyclone ledger had Johnson as a two-time winner in
the individual events, as she captured the 200 individual
medley (2:44.92) as well as the 400/500 freestyle (6:57.92).
Burgoyne proved to be the best in the 100 freestyle (1:09.15),
and complemented that effort with a runner-up 200 freestyle
finish (2:26.41). Maughon took second in the 100 breaststroke
(1:29.18) and the 100 butterfly (1:25.26), with teammate Amber
Garland seizing runner-up honors in the 50 freestyle (31.75)
and 100 backstroke (1:27.77).
Key came in second in the 200 individual medley, putting up
a 2:58.
The 400 freestyle relay saw Amber Garland, Key, Johnson and
Burgoyne show the way with a 4:49.36.
Garland, Maughon, Lindsay Norris and Darby Crawford posted
a second-place 2:33.25 in the 200 medley.
Elizabethton will compete in a six-way meet at 6 p.m. tonight
at Virginia High. The meet was originally scheduled for Wednesday
evening.
