Sullivan South shakes Hampton in second half

   KINGSPORT--The Hampton Bulldogs couldn't have asked for better defense during the first half of their game against Sullivan South Thursday night.
   However, one quarter got them behind big and it was hard for them to bounce back.
   Trailing 22-18 after the first half, the Rebels outscored Hampton 24-10 in the third quarter, and added some big buckets in the fourth quarter to wind out a 68-46 win at The Rebel Gym.
   Nineteen points from Ben Hauldrin, along with three other double-digit games from the Rebels, paced the 3-A unit to their win.
   Hampton's leading scored Adam Miller scored only two points in the game.
   South went on a 7-0 run in the first quarter after buckets from Levi Ashworth, Brad Conkin and Ben Conway.
   Hampton struck right back with a deuce from Shane Campbell and a trey from Lucas Honeycutt to make it a two-point game.
   The Bulldogs cut South's lead again in the second quarter after a trey from Zac Trivett and a pair of layins from Jacob Culler and Jordan Honeycutt.
   But South stayed on top after a seven-point frame from Hauldrin.
   The Rebels kicked things into high gear in the third stanza when Mitch Bedingfield hit two trifectas, while Evan Tolly and Conway couldn't miss a shot.
   The Bulldogs got six opening points from Trivette and a bucket from Honeycutt, but they only squeezed out 10 points in the frame.
   Timmy Joe Meade and Tolly opened things up in the fourth for South after Hampton's second technical foul of the night to make it a 22-point game.
   Hampton fought back with a pair of treys from Honeycutt and Travis Smith to make it a 16-point game.
   South would hold on to take the win.
   Bedingfield added 14 points for South, which got 10 apiece from Conway and Meade. Honeycutt and Smith led the 'Dogs with 13 and 12, respectively.

   It took two overtimes but the Hampton Bulldogs pulled out a junior varsity win in the early contest at the Rebel Gym over Sullivan South.
   Hampton dropped three late leads in the game against the Rebels, prompting the first and second overtimes.
   However, a strong nine-point frame from Alex Ingram led the unit to victory after some missed buckets from the Rebels.
   Ingram had 24 points in the game to lead both squads, including nine points in the second quarter as well.
   South took an 18-11 advantage after the first quarter behind Tyler Knight and Aaron Willey despite a pair of treys from Lucas Arwood.
   Ingram and Jeremy Culler paced Hampton's 13 points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs showed strong defense by holding South to three points.
   Tyler Knight and Justin Roberts swapped buckets with Hampton's Jordan Honeycutt and Daniel Smith in the third quarter, but the Rebels regained their lead.
   Hampton built a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter behind Ingram and Honeycutt, but Justin Roberts and Joe Lane led a Sullivan South rally with under two minutes remaining.
   Daniel Leeson hit a big trey and Roberts threw it in to send it into overtime tied at 51.
   Arwood and Ingram gave Hampton a quick three-point lead but South brought it back again in the first overtime behind Willey.
   The 'Dogs went up seven behind Ingram in the second overtime before Lane cut it to two. He missed a one and one and Lucas Arwood made a free throw to give Hampton a three-point lead in the final seconds.
   South missed three buckets late and it led to Hampton's win.
   Jeremy Culler and Lucas Arwood added double-digit games for Hampton with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
   Willey, Lane and Knight paced South with 19, 12 and 13 each.
