E-Twins look again to Smith
from staff reports
The Minnesota Twins announced on Tuesday that
Elizabethton's own Ray Smith will be the new manager for the
Elizabethton Twins in 2002. Smith, the current athletic director
at Milligan College, coached third base for the Twins last
season.
In 1989, Smith was the Appalachian League Manager
of the Year. He enters his 14th season as either coach or
manager of Elizabethton. Joining Smith on the squad will be
former big leaguer Jeff Reed.
Reed spent sixteen years in Professional Baseball
and was a former first round pick of the Twins in 1980. Both
Smith and Reed started their pro careers in Elizabethton.
Eight year veteran Jim Shellenback returns as
the pitching coach. The Twins open the 2002 season at Johnson
City on June 18.
