Upstart Western Carolina defeats Lady Buccaneers

   CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Western Carolina beat ETSU 85-79 Saturday afternoon to improve to 10-4 overall for their best start since the opening of the 1980-81 ladies basketball season.
   Laura Echols led the charge with 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Catamounts who evened their record to 3-3 in Southern Conference play.
   Lauren Trantham led the Lady Buccaneers with a career high 20 points, nearly doubling her season average. Trantham had dead-eye aim hitting 8-of-9 shots from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
   Megan Jackson had 12 points for ETSU and Erin Thurman added 11. The Lady Bucs fell to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the SoCon.
   ETSU returns to the court on Monday night at 7 p.m. when they host the Lady Spartans of UNC-Greensboro.
