Patrolman Mike Merritt reported a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by Sarah Brown of Erwin was traveling south on the Milligan Highway when her vehicle was struck by a Kia driven by Mary Elrod of Elizabethton. The accident occurred while Elrod was attempting to make a left-hand turn into Pineridge Storage and turned into the path of Brown's vehicle, said Merritt. Elrod was charged with failure to yield. Brown and a passenger, Donald Carathers, also of Erwin were both transported to Johnson City Medical Center by the Carter County Rescue Squad. Neither Brown nor Carathers was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report. Alcohol was a factor in the accident, Merritt said.
