City, was arrested Friday by Carter County Sheriff's Department
Deputy Dean Jones following a traffic stop. Miller was charged
with DUI and violation of implied consent.
Fatality
* Officers from Sullivan County Sheriff's Office
were dispatched Thursday to 106 Smith St., Kingsport, regarding
a structure fire. Fire personnel discovered flames coming
out of the front portion of the home, near the door. Two firefighters
attempted entry and sustained minor injuries. Both were transported
to Holston Valley Hospital for treatment. Upon investigation,
the body of a male subject, identified as Paul V. Carter,
62, was found inside the residence. His body was sent to Quillen-Dishner
College of Medicine for autopsy. A faulty extension cord is
believed to have caused the fire.
Financial responsibility

Tuesday by Elizabethton Police Department Ptl. Mike Sproviero
for failure to provide proof of financial responsibility following
a traffic stop at the intersection of East Mill and Poplar
streets.
* Calvin Smith, 37, 263 Rocky Branch Road, was
issued a citation Tuesday by EPD Ptl. Mike Sproviero following
a traffic accident on West Elk Avenue. Smith was cited for
failure to provide proof of financial responsibility.
Peele motion denied
* An inmate at Northeast Correctional Complex
who pleaded guilty in 1982 to the first-degree murder of a
Hampton church deacon has been denied a jury trial by the
state Court of Criminal Appeals. In a Jan. 16 decision, the
court upheld a decision by Carter County Criminal Court which
denied a motion by Clifford Peele to withdraw his guilty plea.
Peele was not sentenced until 1990, after several years of
testifying against co-defendants. He filed a motion to withdraw
the plea before his sentencing hearing was held, then filed
another motion following sentencing.
