Thomas A. Berry

   Thomas A. "Tom" Berry, 52, 182 Heather Lane, Johnson City, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center.

   Mr. Berry was a native of Washington County and had lived most of his life in this area. He was a son of the late Leroy Anson and Rosa Triplett Berry.

   Mr. Berry was a salesman with Crown Coffee Vending Company, Church Hill, and a member of the Kingsport unit of the Army National Guard. He attended Knob Creek Church of the Brethren. He had been active with the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Department with umpiring and scorekeeping.

   Survivors include his very special companion, Jan Lowe, Johnson City; a sister, Mrs. Harlis (Rosalie) Cox, Kingsport; and a brother, Leroy A. Berry, Cocoa, Fla. Seven nieces and nephews also survive.

Lucy V. Britt

   Mrs. Lucy Virginia Britt, 84, 103 Cochran Road, Jonesborough, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

   Mrs. Britt was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William and Amanda Bowers Hopson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Fred Britt, April 28, 1980, four brothers and four sisters.

   Mrs. Britt had lived in Jonesborough since 1987. She was an employee of the Burger King, Boones Creek.

   Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Britt, Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Ralph Hopson; and a special friend, William E. Carr.

Arnold Johnson

   Arnold Johnson, 75, 201 W. Mill Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

   Mr. Johnson was a native of Elk Park, N.C., and the son of the late William and Minnie Winters Johnson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Johnson, and a sister, Margalee Turbyfill.

   Mr. Johnson was of the Baptist faith and a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and T.P.I. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II.

   Survivors include his wife, Polly Johnson, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sharon Johnson, Blountville; a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Joseph Broyles, Johnson City; a granddaughter, Becky Jenkins, Gray; three grandsons, Tim Vines, Jonesborough, Aron Johnson, Limestone, and Dewey Johnson, Johnson City; two brothers, Brooks Johnson, Minneapolis, N.C., and Proffitt Johnson, Hammond, Ind.; and a sister, Billie Ward, Elk Park, N.C. Four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

John A. Kaytis

   John A. Kaytis, 77, 116 Lexington Avenue, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at his residence.

   Mr. Kaytis was a native of Rumford, Maine, and the son of the late John F. and Katherine Kaytis. He was also preceded in death by a sister.

   Mr. Kaytis was Executive Coordinator for PSG of Elizabethton and a 1995 graduate of Milligan College. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

   Survivors include his wife, Betty Kaytis, of the home; a daughter, Susie Kaytis Evans, Boston, Mass.; a son, John Robert Kaytis of Florida; and a step-son, Rick Ives, North Wilkesboro, N.C. One niece and one nephew also survive.

Harvey D. Perkins

   Harvey D. Perkins, 91, 1608 Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at his residence.

   Mr. Perkins was a native of Kansas City, Mo., and had lived in Johnson City since 1918. He was a son of the late Jacob Henry and Jessie Nickles Perkins and was also preceded in death by a half-sister.

   Mr. Perkins was a retired road construction superintendent with Malone Brothers and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served with the 126th Calvary. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Loyal Men's Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the J.C. Masonic Lodge #486, All Scottish Rite Bodies and Kerbella Shrine Temple.

   Survivors include his wife, Ruby Louise Saylor Perkins, and two sons, Jake H. Perkins, Jonesborough, and Thomas W. Perkins, Johnson City. Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Richard A. Rosenbaum

   Richard Allen Rosenbaum, 36, 918 Cedar Avenue, Elizabethton, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, in Gastonia, N.C.

   Mr. Rosenbaum was a native of Carter County and a son of Clifford Rosenbaum, of the home, and the late Bessie Perkey Rosenbaum.

   Mr. Rosenbaum had lived in Gastonia for the past 10 years and had just moved back to Elizabethton. He was a Cake Decorator and attended Prayer Tabernacle.

   Survivors, in addition to his father, include two brothers, Ernest Rosenbaum, Elizabethton, and Eugene Rosenbaum, Johnson City; two sisters, Joyce Miller, of Maryland, and Emma Rosenbaum, Elizabethton; three nieces, Pamela Miller and Lisa Miller, both of Maryland, and Amy Rosenbaum, Johnson City; a nephew, Johnny Rosenbaum, Johnson City; and a very special friend, Mrs. Mary Smith Oliver.

   ROSENBAUM -- Funeral services for Richard Allen Rosenbaum, 36, 918 Cedar Avenue, Elizabethton, who died Sunday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Prayer Tabernacle with Rev. A.G. Rev. Thomas B. Welch Jr.

   Rev. Thomas B. Welch Jr., 76, of Columbia, S.C., died Sunday, March 28, 1999, after a long illness.

   Rev. Welch was a native of Dallas Texas, and a son of the late Thomas Benjamin and Elizabeth Wells Welch. He was raised in Goliad, Texas and spent six years with the U.S. Navy, enlisting prior to World War II and staying for the duration. He served on the USS Henry T. Allen troop ship, the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain, and saw action in both the European and South Pacific theaters of war.

   Rev. Welch was a graduate of the University of Corpus Christi and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1949, and for nearly 50 years served as pastor of Southern Baptist churches in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, Florida and South Carolina. From 1977-1984, he pastored Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Nichols, S.C. After retirement, he served as interim pastor at Friendship Baptist Church in Gresham. He also served as interim pastor for International Baptist Church in Hamburg, Germany and the Calvary Baptist Church in Augsburg, Germany. More recently he served as interim pastor at Mt. Elon Baptist Church in Hopkins.

   Rev. Welch also wrote for several devotional publications, such as Our Daily Bread, Home Life and the Baptist Bulletin Service. He belonged to several civic clubs, including the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, as well as the VFW Post #6122 and American Legion Post #0089, both of Mullins.

   Survivors include his wife, Audrey Blevins Welch, Columbia, S.C.; three sons, Thomas Welch III, St. Louis, Mo., Rodney Welch, Elgin, and Kevin B. Welch, Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Ada Sue Stephens, Goliad, Texas; four grandchildren, Rachel, Robert, Caroline and Katie; two daughters-in-law, Diane Welch and Robin Welch; and a special mother-in-law, Ruth Greene Blevins.

   Funeral services and interment will be held Thursday in Columbia.

Carson H. Grindstaff

   Carson H. Grindstaff, 70, 808 East B Street, Elizabethton, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

   Mr. Grindstaff was a native of Carter County and a son of the late William Ray and Pearl Oliver Grindstaff. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Vadia Taylor Grindstaff, March 29, 1997, and a son, Terry Grindstaff, April 30, 1996.

   Mr. Grindstaff was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church where he was an assistant Sunday School Teacher of the Senior Men's Class. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II.

   Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Thomas Crow, Brookeville, Md.; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Herbert Eugene and Eva Grindstaff, Elizabethton, Gary D. and Carolyn Grindstaff, Johnson City, and Mrs. Peggy Grindstaff, Elizabethton; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold, Elizabethton; and a brother, Leslie Grindstaff, Elizabethton. Seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Herbert Henson

   Herbert "Hub" Henson, 70, 1447 Poga Road, Butler, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center following a short illness.

   Mr. Henson was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late Frank and Ida Mann Henson.

   Mr. Henson was a maintenance worker at Land Harbor in Spruce Pine, N.C. He was a member of Piney Grove Church of Christ.

   Survivors include a daughter, Connie Henson, Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Goldie Henson, Lenoir, N.C.; and two sisters, Virgie Cable, Elizabethton, and Bernice Hartley, Butler. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Vernon R. Lockner

   Vernon R. Lockner, 64, 335 Peters Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at his residence.

   Mr. Locker was a native of Washington County and a son of the late Fred and Lola Starnes Lockner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Lowe Lockner, July 28, 1997, and two brothers.

   Mr. Lockner was a graduate of Lamar High School. He was a retired employee of Mapes Piano String Company.

   Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Dollie Hansen, Kenosha, Wis. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Virgie G. Miller

   Mrs. Virgie G. Miller, 88, 1213 Division Street, Johnson City, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Four Oaks Health Care Center, Jonesborough.

   Mrs. Miller was a native of Carter County and had lived in Johnson City most of her life. She was a daughter of the late H.P. and Cora Ratliff Bunton and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Miller, in 1994, a brother, five sisters and a half-brother.

   Mrs. Miller was a member of Dry Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

   Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Morris-Baker North Chapel with graveside services and interment at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Monte Vista Burial Park.

Anton L. Policky

   Anton L. Policky, 84, of York, Neb., died Friday, March 26, 1999, in York.

   Mr. Policky was born December 6, 1914 at Loma, Neb., to Karl and Josephine (Potocka) Policky. He married Adeline Policky on Febuary 22, 1938, at Bee, Neb.

   Mr. Policky was a retired farmer and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.

   Survivors include his wife, Adeline Policky, York, Neb.; a son and daughters-in-law, Leroy and Agnes Policky, Elizabethton; two grandsons, Trenton Policky, Lawton, Okla., and Troy Policky, Johnson City; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Frances Holly, O'Neill, Neb., Katherine Stoupa, Seward, Neb., and Agnes and Joseph Liska, Bee, Neb.

   Funeral services and interment were conducted Tuesday in York.

Nelson R. Tester

   Nelson R. Tester, 84, 1011 Sylvan Circle, Greeneville, formerly of Butler, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville, following an extended illness.

   Mr. Tester was a native of Watauga County, N.C., and the son of the late Eli Finley and Cameline Presnell Tester. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

   Mr. Tester was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church, Butler, where he served as a deacon and song leader. He has written numerous gospel songs. He was a retired school teacher of 32 years in the Carter County School System.

   He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II, and was also a TSSAA Basketball Official and Supervisor. He received his B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University.

   Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie L. Tester, of the home; a son, James R. Tester, Chuckey; a daughter, Linda Kay Tester Hollaway, Butler; two brothers, Louis Tester, Grafton, Ohio, and William Howard Tester, Morristown; and three sisters, Rilda Campbell, Newport, Ida Finey, Butler, and Ruth Jones, Johnson City. Three grandsons, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Thelma C. Bryant

   Mrs. Thelma C. Bryant, 87, 610 Pine Hill Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.

   Mrs. Bryant was a native of Corbin, Ky., and had lived 50 years in Elizabethton. She was a daughter of the late John M. and Isabelle Collins. She was a retired clerk with State Farm Insurance. Mrs. Bryant was a member of the Woman's Civic Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by two sisters.

   Survivors include her husband, John J. Bryant, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan B. and David C. Garrett, Gastonia, N.C.; two grandchildren: Bryant L. Garrett, Raleigh, N.C., and Kelwey N. Garrett, Charlotte, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Martha M. Boone

   Mrs. Martha Marie Greer Boone, 87, formerly of Rt. 1, Roan Mountain, and the Asbury Center, Johnson City, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.

   Mrs. Boone was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late William Floyd and Sarah Caroline Street Greer.    Mrs. Boone was a member of the Burbank Free Will Baptist Church and attended East Side Baptist Church. She was a retired cook with the Carter County School System, serving at Cloudland High School.

   Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Ray Teter, Watauga, Grace and Carl Canter and Charlotte and Bud Julian, all of Elizabethton; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Mary Boone, Watauga, Harold Dean and Judy Boone and Jim Boone, all of Elizabethton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kansas and Pierce Hughes, Elizabethton, and Marie and Crawford Barnett, Roan Mountain; a brother and sister-in-law, Elige and Beatrice Greer, Burlington, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Audrey Bowers, Bluff City.

   Dewey E. Collins, 71, Ivy Hall Nursing Home, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.

   Mr. Collins was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Spurgeon and Bessie Pierce Collins. He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

   Mrs. Emily Keever Barnett, 89, Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, formerly of Simerly Creek, Hampton, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.

   Mrs. Barnett was a native of Erwin and had lived in Hampton most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Joe and Amanda Roberts Keever and was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Richmond Barnett, June 17, 1992; a daughter, Beverly Hensley; four brothers, Fred Keever, George Keever, Claude Keever and Nelson Keever; two sisters, Pheobe Johnson and Cordia Hensley; and a great-grandson, Jason Hensley.

   Mrs. Barnett was formerly employed with Southern Pottery. She was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church.

   Survivors include a daughter, Linda Tolley, Hampton, and four grandchildren, Greg Hensley, Kingsport, Sandy Lingerfelt, Erwin, David Wade Tolley, Roan Mountain, and Christopher Tolley, Hampton. Gregg E. Peters

   Gregg Elwayne Peters, 38, 2891-J Walnut View Court, Winston-Salem, N.C., died Monday, March 22, 1999, at his home.

   Mr. Peters was a native of Elizabethton and a son of Elsie Peters Oaks, Elizabethton, and the late Elmer Wayne Peters.

   Mr. Peters graduated from Drewry Mason High School in Ridgeway, attended the University of Virginia, and graduated from Forsyth Technical College. He worked at Pepsico Inc. and Wake Forest University as a systems analyst. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Ridgeway's Grace Baptist Church.

   Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Debra Smith Peters, of the home, and two brothers, Dr. Randy A. Peters, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Roger W. Peters, Kingsport. Three nieces and two nephews also survive.

   Funeral services were held Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church in Martinsville, Va. Interment followed in Ridgeway's Mountain View Cemetery.

Hazel L. Walker

   Mrs. Hazel L. Walker, 88, 2564 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Asbury Center following a lengthy illness.

   Mrs. Walker was a native of Johnson County and had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a daughter of the late Cornelius and Claudia Stout Roberts and was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Walker, in 1969, and a daughter, Mary Jones, in 1986.

   Mrs. Walker was a retired saleslady with Thomas Ladies Shop. She was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

   Survivors include a son, Howard Walker, Johnson City; a daughter, Doris McKeehan, of the home; and two brothers, D.R. Roberts and Stanley Roberts, both of Bristol. Nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Ernest "BlackCat" Rasar

   Ernest "Black Cat" Rasar, 77, 802 Parkway Blvd., Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

   Mr. Rasar was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Snyder Rasar and Lela Rasar Richardson. He was also preceded in death by a brother.

   Mr. Rasar was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton and many civic and sporting organizations. He graduated from U.T. and ETSU with a B.S. degree in physical education and social studies and earned his master's degree in Education Supervision and Administration from the University of Mississippi.

   Mr. Rasar held many positions in the Carter County School System, including attendance teacher, supervisor, principal for many years, and most recently served two terms as superintendent of schools. He also worked for D.C. Heath Publishing Company and the U.S. Forest Service. In addition, he served for 40 years as a TSSAA basketball and football official. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving in World War II in the Pacific and Okinawa and Occupation Forces in China.

   Survivors include his wife, Madelyn Rasar, of the home; a daughter, Lee Anna Rasar, Eau Claire, Wis.; a half-brother, John Rasar, Kingsport; and three half-sisters, Lucy Peters and Patty Gentry, both of Elizabethton, and Sue Ready, Knoxville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

   Allen D. Street, 96, 443 Sally Cove Creek Road, Hampton, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.

   Mr. Street was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Clingmon and Katie Gouge Street. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

   Mr. Street was a retired construction worker. He attended the Free Will Baptist Church.

Robert Mick

   Robert "Bob" Mick, 63, 135 Ed Davis Road, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.

   Mr. Mick was a native of Weston, W.Va., and the son of the late Rex K. and Lenora Finster Mick. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara M. LeBouef Mick, and his mother-in-law, Lillie May.

   Mr. Mick was a charter member and elder at Elizabethton Alliance Church. He was a U.S. Postal Service employee and a retired Air Force veteran, serving during the Viet Nam Conflict. He had served on the crew of Air Force One for presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, and as Air Force One Crew Chief for presidents Ford and Carter.

   Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ellen May Mick, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Judy Mick, Gulfport, Miss.; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Eddie Morelock, Johnson City; two brothers, Carroll Mick, Elizabethton, and Larry Mick, Hermitage, Tenn.; five step-brothers, Bill, Michael, Randy, Daniel and Donald Mick, all of West Virginia; a step-sister, Sue Bullion of West Virginia; his step-mother, Irene Mick of West Virginia; three grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Mick, both of Elizabethton, and Courtney Morelock, Johnson City; and a special aunt and uncle, Clarence and Hattie Finser of West Virginia.    Danny P. Harvey, 45, 122 Spears Avenue, Elizabethton, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

   Mr. Harvey was a lifelong resident of Carter County. He was self-employed in small engine repair and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

   Survivors include his parents, Orville and Lonnie Stout Harvey, of the home. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

   John S. Mangognia, 53, of Buffalo Grove, Ill., died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Saint Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., following a lengthy illness.

   Mr. Mangognia was a native of Chicago, Ill., and a son of the late Benny and Jenny Ventura Mangognia. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Vito and Carlo Mangognia.

   Mr. Mangognia was an employee of the Advance Transformer Company in Rosepoint, Ill., with 20 years of service. He was a Ham Radio Operator.

   Survivors include his wife, Rebecca E.    Mr. Buck was a native of Washington County and a son of the late Ira N. and Mary Ruth Jenkins Buck. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Odell Buck.

   Mr. Buck was a retired employee of the Tennessee Valley Authority and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 917, Chattanooga. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Boone Trail Baptist Church.

   Survivors include his wife, Mary Stalcup Buck; a son and daughter-in-law, William N. and Sherri Buck, Johnson City; two sisters, Faye Miller, Narvon, Pa., and Francis Hicks, Jonesborough; three brothers, J.D.    Freeda Croy, 88, formerly of 303-1/2 West G Street, Elizabethton, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

   Mrs. Croy was a native of Los Lunas, N.M., and the daughter of the late George A. and Anna Marie Sichlar. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Davis Croy Sr., July 21, 1993, a daughter, June Croy, six sisters and three brothers.

   Mrs. Croy had lived in Elizabethton for the past 52 years. She was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton and attended St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. She was a former member and art instructor of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Club.

   Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Clyde Croy Jr. and Linda Croy, Elizabethton, and Jeff Croy, Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Georgia and Richard Bemis, Albuquerque, N.M.; and a brother, George Sichlar, Los Lunas, N.M. Lloyd G. Bateman Sr.

   Lloyd Granville Bateman Sr., 74, of Milton, Fla., died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

   Mr. Bateman was a native of Elizabethton and had resided in Milton, Fla., for many years. He was retired from the United States Navy with over 23 years of service and was a survivor of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Walter A. Clark

   Lt. Walter Appleton Clark, 87, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in Charlottesville, Va.

   Mr. Clark was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Charles Burton and Dolly McClain Clark. He was also preceded in death by a son, Edwin Hunter Clark, three brothers, Bill, Horace and Charles Burton Clark, and a sister, Irene.

   Mr. Clark received a B.A. degree from East Tennessee State University. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, served in the Navy Reserves and was a businessman.

   Survivors include his wife, Freda Lea Crox Clark; two sons, Bill and K.C.; and three sisters, Theresa Brumit, Burnice C. Furches and Marguerite Davis, as well as numerous relatives.

Jessie Hartley

   Jessie Hartley, 57, 607 Long Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, March 19, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.

   Mr. Hartley was a native of Butler and the son of the late Carlie William and Rosia Lee Vines Hartley. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel "Lottie" Hartley, a brother, L.D. Hartley, and an uncle, Dana Hartley.

   Mr. Hartley was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church. He was an employee of the Carter County Sheriff's Department and also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.

   Ray J. Hartley, 82, 101 Lynnview Circle, Elizabethton, died Friday, March 19, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center, Johnson City.

   Mr. Hartley was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a son of the late Roe and Agnes Tucker Hartley.

   Mr. Hartley was a member of United Brethren Church of Kettering, Ohio. He was retired from the General Motors Corporation and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

   Survivors include his wife, Lucy Lewis Hartley, of the home; a daughter, Linda Hartley Clark, Newland, N.C.; two sisters, Juanita Deshotel and Ruby Hartley, both of Houston, Texas; and three granddaughters, Melissa Maston, Melody Waldrep and Kelsey Clark, all of Newland, N.C.    Mrs. Elizabeth "Beth" Minton Julian, 81, 131 Southgate Drive, Elizabethton, died Friday, March 19, 1999, in Bel Air, Md., following an extended illness.

   Mrs. Julian was the daughter of the late Walter Sr. and Ethel Hughes Minton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Reginald Julian, her step-father, James Ray, and two brothers, Patrick Ray and Bruce Minton.

   Mrs. Julian was a wife, mother and homemaker.

   Survivors include two sons, Richard Julian, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Douglas Julian, Bel Air, Md.; a daughter, Kay Julian Dawson, Baltimore, Md.; two daughters-in-law, Hortensia Julian and Joann Julian; a son-in-law, Larry Dawson; three grandsons, Patrick Julian, Giovanni Julian and Jarrett Julian; a sister, Gwendolyn Reincke; three brothers, Walter Minton Jr., Tom Minton and Kenny Minton; and a cousin, Josephine Hughes.    Cecil S. "Doc" Nelson, 84, 400 Silver Grove Road, Bluff City, died Friday, March 19, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness.

   Mr. Nelson was a native of Sullivan County and a son of the late Robert and Leiza Self Nelson.

   Mr. Nelson attended the Bluff City Baptist Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9629, a member of the American Legion and was an Army veteran, having served in World War II.

   Survivors include a step-son, Clarence Grindstaff, Bluff City, and two sisters, Ada Morrell, Elizabethton, and Nancy Perry, Bluff City. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

   Dana T. Walsh Sr., 93, 27 Sims Hill Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.

   Mr. Walsh was a native of Johnson County and the son of the late Robert Webster and Sarah Grindstaff Walsh. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dana T. Walsh Jr., a brother and two sisters.

   Mr. Walsh was of the Baptist faith and retired from the Bemberg Corporation in 1962. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM and was a Shriner.

   Survivors include his wife, Mae Pearson Walsh, of the home; three sons, Darrell Walsh, Harold Walsh and Gregory Walsh, all of Elizabethton; and two daughters, Ruth White, Knoxville, and Dorothy Little, Elizabethton. Nineteen grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

   Mrs. Sandstrom was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Matson H. and Zeuleaka Bradley Marsh. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence "Swede" Sandstrom, August 5, 1973.

   Mrs. Sandstrom was a 50+ year member of the Sycamore Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star #163 and a member of the First Christian Church.

   Ben H. Hinkle, 87, 898 Piercetown Road, Butler, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the James H. Quillen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a brief illness.

   Mr. Hinkle was a lifetime resident of Carter County and a son of the late George and Kathryn Fletcher Hinkle. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walt, Don and Ted Hinkle.

   Mr. Hinkle was a retired employee of American Bemberg Corporation with more than 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. He attended Pierce Baptist Church.

   Norman E. Holden, 57, 2985 Siam Road, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.

   Mr. Holden was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Calvin and Nannie Sluder Holden. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

   Mr. Holden was retired as a small-engine repairman. He was a member of the Upper Shell Creek Christian Church, Roan Mountain.

   Mr. Reece was a native of Akron, Ohio, and the son of the late Charles Edward and Beatrice Witcher Reece.

   Mr. Reece was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church and a retired employee of Holston Defense. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean War.

   Survivors include his wife, Carol Hardin Reece, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Edward II and Pattie Reece, Elizabethton; a sister, Carolyn Reece Cash, Fayetteville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Sarah Reece, Elizabethton; and a grandson, Steven Reece, Elizabethton. Ethel L. Shaw

   Mrs. Ethel L. Shaw, 98, Stockton Residential Home, Roan Mountain, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Banner Elk, N.C., after a brief illness.

   Mrs. Shaw was a native of Cullman, Ala., and a daughter of the late Thomas and Mattie Duke Screws. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Shaw, July 8, 1976.

   Mrs. Shaw had lived in Carter County since 1989. She was a member of Cahaba Heights Baptist Church, Cahaba Heights, Ala.

Gilbert S. Abel

   Gilbert S. Abel, 77, 701 Barton Street, Johnson City, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

   Mr. Abel was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a son of the late Gilbert and Lucy Gobble Abel. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald Michael Abel, three brothers and a sister.

   Mr. Abel was a pastor of area churches for over 30 years and was a decorated World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church and attended Second Baptist Church in Jonesborough.

   He was a member of the Watauga Masonic Lodge #622 and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the York Rite Masonic Body. He was a member of the Appalachian Ministers Association.

   Survivors include his wife, Grace Edith Abel; a daughter, Judy Broyles, Johnson City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Linda Abel and Pastor Terry and Connie Abel, all of Johnson City; three sisters, Gertrude Campbell, Mary Ruth France and Grace Whitson, all of Johnson City; six grandchildren, Lisa Broyles Jubenville and her husband, Douglas, Columbia, S.C., Larry Abel Jr., Bristol, Deanna Abel Johnson and her husband, Rick, Elizabethton, Joy Abel, Hannah Abel and Rebekah Abel, all of Johnson City; and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey Johnson, Lauren Jubenville and Keaton Johnson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Edward J. Johnson Sr.

   Edward J. Johnson Sr., 84, 243 Rocky Branch Road, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.

   Mr. Johnson was a native of Avery County, N.C., and the son of the late Robert and Mettie Perry Johnson. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Edward Joseph '"'E.J.'"' Johnson Jr. and Paul Johnson, and three brothers.

   Mr. Johnson had lived in Carter County most of his life. He was a member of the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church and a retired employee of Bemberg Industries after working 47 years.

   Survivors include his wife, Ruby Perry Johnson, of the home; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Norma Allen, Pinehurst, N.C., Phyllis and Dwight Minton, Elizabethton, Margie and James C. Parks, Johnson City, and Carolyn Johnson Slaughter and Mark Slaughter, Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Nancy Johnson and Lynn Johnson, all of Elizabethton; and a sister, Della McNeal, Knoxville. Nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Matthew N. Miller

   Matthew N. Miller, 19, 603 Northgate, Johnson City, died at his residence Monday, March 15, 1999, following an extended illness.

   Mr. Miller was a native of Johnson City and the son of Samuel B. Miller II and Karen Greene Miller, both of Johnson City.

   Mr. Miller was a 1998 honor graduate of Science Hill High School.

   Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Leia K. Miller, of the home; a brother, Neil Miller, of the home; a half-sister, Anna C. Miller, Johnson City; a half-brother, Samuel B. Miller III, Johnson City; his maternal grandmother, Mildred Greene, Johnson City; his paternal grandparents, Samuel B. and Anna Marie Miller, Johnson City; and his paternal great-grandmother, Nelle W. Irish, Johnson City. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Robert Oliver

   Robert "Uncle Bob" Oliver, 88, 1264 Bristol Highway, Elizabethton, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at the James H. Quillen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a brief illness.

   Mr. Oliver was a native of Bristol and had been a resident of Carter County for the past 55 years. He was a son of the late Wiley C. and Rhoda A. Oliver and was also preceded in death by his wife, Rosa McGee Oliver, in 1998.

   Mr. Oliver was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation with 30 years of service and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Borderview Christian Church.

   Survivors include four daughters, Rhoda Oliver and Betty Jo Sams, both of Elizabethton, Frances Ritchie McCarter and Lucille Oliver, both of Gatlinburg; four grandchildren, Leslie "Bo" Ritchie, Angie Williams and Sheila Arnold, all of Elizabethton, and Marie Rosenbalm, Sevierville; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Arnold, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Douglas M. Forbes

   Douglas M. Forbes, 57, 1831 Woodhaven Drive, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home.

   Mr. Forbes was a native of Carter County and the son of the late William C. "Bill" and Evelyn Lewis Forbes. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robin Wayne Forbes, a sister, Marie Darrell Forbes, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chase and Hattie Teague, and a brother-in-law, John L. Frazier Jr.

   Mr. Forbes was formerly employed and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was of the Baptist faith and formerly served as a Deacon at Pinecrest Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and the National Guard and a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166.

   Survivors include his wife, Martha Teague Forbes, of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Yolanda Forbes Miller and Michael Miller, Elizabethton, and Shelley Forbes, Mountain City; two sons, Joel Forbes, Elizabethton, and Lance Forbes, Gray; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Carolyn Forbes Frazier Pearman, Elizabethton, and Wanda Geraldine Forbes Walls and Dred Walls, Johnson City; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Porter and Norma Jean Forbes, Elizabethton, Lloyd Klenard and Emma Forbes, Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Roger and Mary Forbes, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews and one favorite grand nephew, Jordan Mitchell, Elizabethton, also survive.

Earl Simerly

   Earl "Jay" Simerly, 76, 211 Willow Lane, Hampton, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.

   Mr. Simerly was a native of Carter County, Roan Mountain area, and the son of the late Earl Simerly Sr. and Alice Lyons Simerly. He was also preceded in death by a son, Bradley Dale Simerly, in 1957, and a brother, Howard Simerly.

   Mr. Simerly was a retired employee of Empire Furniture Company. He was a member of the Upper Gap Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

   Survivors include his wife, Edith Arnett Simerly, of the home; four daughters, Doris King, Judy Guinn and Jill Stanbery, all of Elizabethton, and Janie Guinn, Roan Mountain; four sons, Rev. Allen Simerly and Teddy Simerly, both of Hampton, Leroy Simerly, Hickory, N.C., and Rev. Danny Simerly, Elizabethton; seven sisters, Rebecca Livingston, Johnson City, Gladys Blevins and Anna Julian, both of Roan Mountain, Billie Birchfield, Cloverdale, Calif., Ruby Sloope and Ella Jane Simerly, both of Taylorsville, N.C., and Betty Taylor, Elizabethton; and a brother, Johnny Simerly, Taylorsville, N.C. Nineteen grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
