Eugene
Bowers, 76, 704 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, died Monday, July 3, 2000,
at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr.
Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Hunter and Emma
Crosswhite Bowers. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Goforth,
and his stepfather, Agee D. Williams.
Mr.
Bowers was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton and a
retired mechanical draftsman with Great Lakes Research Corporation.
Survivors
include his wife, Mary Edens Bowers, of the home; a daughter, Debra Bowers Pierce,
Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, J. Howard and Rowena Bowers, Johnson
City; a sister, Elaine Proffitt, Bluff City; and four nephews, Kenny Goforth,
Kingsport, Rick Bowers, Jonesborough, Robert and Mark Proffitt, both of Bluff
City.

Barnett Holtsclaw, 89, of Roan Highlands Nursing Home, formerly of the Whitehead
Hill area of Roan Mountain, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Roan Highlands Nursing
Home following a lengthy illness.
Mrs.
Holtsclaw was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Herb and
Bessie Barnett. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Brewer, and
two brothers, Roosevelt Barnett and Zeb Barnett.
Mrs.
Holtsclaw was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She was retired from the food
service industry and was a homemaker.

include her husband, Beecher Holtsclaw, Roan Mountain; three sons, J.L. Holtsclaw,
Quinlan, Texas, Dennis Holtsclaw, Hampton, and Gene Holtsclaw, Roan Mountain;

Houston.

Lynette Forrest Loum, 64, 206 Joy Drive, Johnson City, died Sunday, July 2,
2000, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Mrs.
Loum was a native of Elmhurst, Ill., and a daughter of the late Donald M. Forrest
I and Mary Myrtle Wiley Forrest.
Mrs.
Loum moved to the Tri-Cities area of upper East Tennessee in 1960, and had periodically
lived in Johnson City. She was a 1953 graduate of Kewanee High School, Kewanee,
Ill., and attended Illinois State Normal University, Normal, Ill. She was employed
in the Financial Aide Department of East Tennessee State University.
She
had been a minister's faithful Christian wife and co-worker, having served Christian
Churches and Churches of Christ in Illinois, Tennessee and Connecticut. She
was a Charter Member of the Litchfield Christian Church, Litchfield, Ill., and
a Charter Member of Women for Christ, Central Illinois Chapter. She was a member
of Job's Daughters, Chicago, Ill., and a member of the Hales Chapel Christian
Church in Gray.
Survivors
include her husband, E. Grant Loum; a son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Theresa
Loum, Athens, Ala.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Diana and David Ross,
Orange, Conn., Jeannie Loum, Johnson City, Michelle and Gus Hernandez, Orlando,
Fla., and Rachael and Michael Stanley, Knoxville; a sister, Jeannie Gibbens,
Eufala, Okla.; and a brother, Donald M. Forrest II, Yates City, Ill. Twelve
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

D. Burrough, 78, 1314 Bristol Highway, Elizabethton, died Friday afternoon in
the Ivy Hall Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He
was a native of Carter County and a son of the late H.M. and Mamie Chambers
Burrough. He was preceded in death by his wife, Freddie Harrell Burrough, two
sisters: Jeana Vinters Dugger and Thelma Holland; a brother, Hobart (June) Burrough;
and three infant brothers.
Mr.
Burrough was a member of the Borderview Christian Church, a member of the Watauga
Masonic Lodge, a York Rite Mason, and a member of the Jericho Shrine Temple.
He was the former owner and operator of Betsy Floral Shop, Elizabethton, and
a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

native of Wilmington, N.C., he was a son of the late Rodolph Duffy and Lola
Maybelle Harrold Cottle. He had lived in Elizabethton for several years. He
was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Cottle.
Mr.
Cottle was a minister and construction worker. He was a veteran of World War
II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was of the Church of God faith.

at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs.
Cox was a native of Hampton and a daughter of the late Charles P. and Sarah
Douglas Jenkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Y. Cox, in
1975; by two sisters: Bonnie Harrell and Edna McCloud; by one brother, Charles
P. Jenkins.
She
was a retired payroll clerk with American Bemberg Corp. Mrs. Cox was a member
of the Hampton Christian Church, a member of the Carolyn Perry Circle and had
served as the church organist for more than 50 years. She had also been the
organist at the Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home for more than 20 years. She was
a member and past president of the Hampton Elementary School PTA and a member
of the Hampton High School PTA, and the Hampton Garden Club.

extended illness.
Mrs.
Gray was a native of Avery County, N.C., (Whaley community), and was the daughter
of the late John and Texie Church McGuire, Sr. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Thomas M. Gray, Jr., on April 13, 1979, and by two sisters: Virginia
McGuire and Sylvia Lane, by two brothers: Estill McGuire and Eustace McGuire.
She
was a member of the First Baptist Church, Elizabethton, and was a homemaker.
She was a past member of the John Carter Chapter of the D.A.R., serving as Past
Regent. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hampton Chapter No.
470, serving as Past Worthy Matron. She was a life member of the Over Mountain
Victory Trail Association and had served as Past Grand Marshall.

(Brookshire) McQueen, 92, 315 Copley Branch Road, Butler, died unexpectedly
at his residence Friday, June 30, 2000.
A
native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Sherman and Mollie Stout
McQueen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Robinson McQueen and five
brothers and one sister.
Mr.
McQueen was a retired construction worker and farmer. He was a member of the
Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679 and the Butler Chapter 218, Order of Eastern Star.
Mr. McQueen was a member of all the York Wright bodies and Jericho Shrine Temple,
Kingsport. He was a member of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge #1847. He was a member
of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local Union #102, Knoxville. Mr. McQueen was
a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. Mr. McQueen had formerly
served as a commissioner of Johnson County for 18 years.

include a brother, A.S. (Shelton) McQueen, Johnson City; and several nieces
and nephews.

10:55 a.m. Monday will be Scott Robinson, George Robinson, Jason McQueen, Keith
Cable, Wade McQueen, Junior Davis and Ebb Matherly. Honorary pallbearers will
be Tommy Collins, Ray Campbell, Bud Main, George Campbell, Bo Colbaugh, Dr.
Lawrence Gordon, deacons of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church and members of all the
Masonic bodies. Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679 will conduct a memorial service
following the funeral service Sunday night. The family will receive friends
from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence
of a nephew, Junior McQueen, 241 Copley Branch Road, Butler. Family and friends
wil assemble at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Monday. Memorial Funeral Chapel is

Joyce
Ann Price, 396 Carter Street, Russiaville, Ind., died Wednesday, June 28, at
St. Vincents Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind.
Mrs.
Price was born near Cutler, Ind. She was the daughter of Morton M. and Dorothy
G. (Maggart) Pullen. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Mrs.
Price lived all her married life in Russiaville. She retired from J.C. Penny's
store in 1981, after working there for 17 years. She graduated from Burlington
High School in 1950. She was a member of the former Ball Hill Methodist Church
and the Happy Homemakers Economics Club.
Survivors
include her husband, Robert W. Price; two daughters: Nancy Frazier, Elizabethton,
Tenn.; and Julie Rayl, Frankfort, Ind.; five grandchildren: Angie Perkins, John
Frazier, Becky Frazier, Samantha Rayl, and Justin Rayl; and three great-grandchildren:
Brianna Vaughn, Lacey Vaughn, and Allysun Perkins.

Jennie M. Street
Jennie
Mae Street, 94, formerly of Heaton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Friday, June
30, 2000, at Roan Highlands Nursing Home following an extended illness.
A
native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John and Callie Louvenia
Denny Street.
She
was a member of Roan Mountain Seventh Day Adventist Church. Ms. Street was a
homemaker.
Survivors
include three daughters and two sons-in-law: Elewese and Cecil Street, Hickory,
N.C.; Inese and Stanley Morris, Marble Mount, Wash.; and Karen Dellinger, Tuscon,
Ariz.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, J.R. Street, Ft. Worth, Texas; and Dillard
and Beulah Street, Roan Mountain; 26 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren;
and six great-great grandchildren.
