Seventeen students at Little Milligan School received an early Christmas last week when they were presented with new bicycles, new shoes, clothes and toys.
On Thursday, 14 children received gifts. The toys and clothes were compliments of Create A Small Program, which according to Clara Cable is a program for underprivileged children.
Cable, who is a volunteer with the program, said the children are chosen by teachers at the school. The program was begun four years ago by a Hampton business - Ice House Saloon. "Donations for the program come from all over for the program. Businesses donate and individuals donate, as do churches. We also have fundraisers all year long," said Cable.
At Hampton Elementary, the gifts were delivered by horse and mule-drawn wagons.
"At Little Milligan, 15 of the children receiving gifts came from the same hollow," said Cable.
Cable said the program used to include four schools, but last year, churches in Roan Mountain and Valley Forge adopted children at Valley Forge School and Cloudland Elementary.
"It is a great program, and this summer we plan a horse-pull as a fundraiser, with the money we raise from the event going to build a park in Hampton for the children," Cable said.
