Christmas Garrison at the fort

A dozen hearty souls braved chill and rain for a truly "old fashion Christmas."

One year the high temperature was 9 degrees, but it didn't matter. Since 1990, Overmountain Men (and women) have gathered at Fort Watauga for the Annual Christmas Muster. As the air grew colder Saturday and the rain turned icy, the "company" cooked and enjoyed a dinner of meat and begatables. They seemed as tough as the pioneers they emulate. "The flavor of the fellowship is the thing I always enjoy, " said veteran Grant Hardin. "It's the sights, smells and sounds."

The "flavor of the fellowship" has brought them together for the past 14 years.
