Blue Cross, Sen. Frist prepare citizens
for biological attacks
From Staff Reports
BlueCross and BlueShield of Tennessee and U.S.
Sen. Bill Frist have joined forces in an effort to educate
and prepare citizens about the increasing risks and potential
dangers of biological attacks.
Beginning this month, BlueCross will distribute
copies of Frist's bioterrorism book, "When Every Moment
Counts," to state health officials involved in preparing
for and responding to biological and chemical attacks. The
books will also be made available to BlueCross members across
the state.
"Everyone has concerns about bioterrorism," said
Vicky Gregg, CEO-elect for BlueCross and BlueShield of Tennessee.
"It's our hope that with the proper information, some fears
can be alleviated, and that we, as a state, can better prepare
to detect and respond to the threat. BlueCross takes its role
in public health seriously and is working hard to ensure the
well-being of all our citizens."
Frist's book provides answers to hundreds of
questions concerning bioterrorism. With a direct question
and answer approach, the book provides basic and useful information
on risks, effects and methods of protection from biological
and chemical attack.
Frist, a physician and leading congressional
voice on bioterrorism, wrote the book in response to the anthrax
attacks of October 2001. From his perspective as a surgeon,
senator and parent, Frist attempts to offer some security
in an increasingly uncertain world.
"BlueCross is proud to partner with Sen. Frist
in distributing this resource and equipping communities and
families with the knowledge they need to protect themselves,"
Gregg said.
BlueCross and BlueShield of Tennessee is the
state's leader in health care financing. Founded in 1945,
the Chattanooga-based nonprofit company serves more than 4.3
million people.
