Fines and court costs on the rise
for violators

Elizabethton City Council last night approved,
on first reading, new fines and court costs, "comparable to
those charged by neighboring cities," for Municipal Court.
The Elizabethton Municipal Code was last updated
in 1994, according to City Attorney Roger Day.
From February to July 2001, most citations issued
by the Elizabethton Police Department were for speeding, running
red lights, failure to yield, following too closely and illegal
parking.
The new fines and court costs are as follows:
Abandoned Vehicle $30, $25 (increase from zero).
Alcohol-Open container $50, $50 (increase from
$5).
Anti-Noise Violation $30, $50 (increase from
$5).
Failure to Maintain Control $50, $50 (increase
from $5).
Failure to Yield-No Contact $40 (increase from
$30), $50 (increase from $5).
Failure to Yield-With Contact $50 (increase from
$40), $50 (increase from $5).
Failure to Yield to Emergency Lights $50, $50
(increase from $5).
Following Too Close-No Contact $40 (increase
from $30), $50 (increase from $5).
Following Too Close-With Contact $50 (increase
from $40), $50 (increase from $5).
Improper Safety Equipment $35 (increase from
$30), $50 (increase from $5).
License-No Operator's License $30, $50 (increase
from $5).
Littering/Illegal Dumping $50, $25 (increase
from zero).
Parking-Blocking Street/Lane of Traffic $40 (increase
from $30), $25 (increase from zero).
Parking-Double Parking $30 (increase from $10),
$25 (increase from zero).
Parking-Fire Zone/Fire Hydrant $40 (increase

Parking Handicap Zone $50 (increase from $30),

In addition to the fine and court costs on each
offense, a state litigation tax is also imposed by State law.
