One person was killed and another critically injured on Wednesday afternoon when a two-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on West Elk Avenue.
Elizabethton Police Department Sgt. Carl Burrough said a maroon station wagon with North Carolina license plates entered into the westbound lane while traveling east on West Elk Avenue. Burrough said when the driver attempted to turn into the Dollar General Store parking area a burgundy sport utility vehicle traveling west hit the station wagon.
The impact ejected a female occupant of the station wagon out of the vehicle and onto the roadway. The Carter County Rescue Squad transported the woman to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to police.
The driver of the station wagon was trapped inside the vehicle when it came to rest in the middle of West Elk Avenue. Elizabethton Fire Department personnel initiated a rapid extrication procedure for the male victim. He was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital. His condition was unknown as of Wednesday night.
Police had not released the identities of the victims at press time.
The SUV skidded off the roadway and struck a building housing Lou's Pawn Shop. The driver of the SUV was not injured, but was taken for tests by the Carter County EMS, according to police.
The force of the collision smashed the vehicle's passenger side front fender and door. The accident showered a portion of the street with broken glass and debris from both vehicles.
The accident blocked traffic both ways along Broad Street and West Elk Avenue as public safety crews worked to clear the scene.
