AmeriCorps to work
on Roan Mountain State Park
From Staff Reports
A ten person team from AmeriCorps National Civilian
Community Corps (NCCC) will begin renovation on a park of
the Appalachian Trail in Roan Mountain State Park. Work on
the 25 mile stretch of land will take place from Oct. 28 through
Nov. 22.
The team of renovators will work to rebuild trails,
stairs, and observation decks. Years of weathering have caused
the trails and their structures to become dangerous to hikers.
AmeriCorps NCCC is based out of Charelston, S.C.
is part of a national service program created to improve the
environment, enhance education, increase public safety, and
assist with disaster relief.
"Our team is very excited about this project,"
corps member, Sarah Balzano said. "We are eager to do environmental
work and get things done for America."
Members of the national organization range in
age from 18-24 and are required to complete at least 1,700
hours of service during the 10-month program. In exchange
for their service AmeriCorps members receive $4,725 toward
college.
The organization is administered by the Corporation
for National and Community Service. For more information about
applying for the program call 800-942-2677 or visit the website
