Red Cross reopens office in Carter County

From Staff Reports

The Carter County American Red Cross office reopened on a part-time basis this week.
Located at 116 Holston Ave., the office closed on Sept. 13 after two employees and the chapter's sitting board of directors resigned and forwarded calls to the office to the Kingsport Area chapter of the Red Cross.
Red Cross emergency services continue to be coordinated through the Kingsport Area chapter. Executive director of the Kingsport chapter Jane Harris says the agency is actively recruiting volunteers from Elizabethton and Carter County for the office.
American Red Cross disaster workers have met with three county families who have lost their homes due to fire in the past two weeks, according a statement released by the Kingsport chapter.
Seven family members have been assisted with food, clothing, temporary lodging and medicine. Several classes of First Aid and CPR have also been taught in recent weeks, according to the Kingsport chapter.
The office will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. Emergency services are available 24 hours a day by calling 542-2833.
Harris said community classes open to the public would be scheduled in Elizabethton soon.
The Carter office will be offering an Adult, Child and Infant CPR and First Aid course on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The course will cover cardiac and breathing emergencies for adults and children and basic first aid skills.
The fee for the course is $30, which covers the cost of the materials. Pre-registration is required. For more information about the class, please call the Carter County Red Cross at 542-2833.
