Referendum turnout 'good'

From Staff Reports

Over 200 of Carter County's 29,500 registered voters cast ballots during the first day of early voting on the wheel tax referendum Wednesday.
Election Commissioner Tracy Harris described the turnout as "good."
"We had 325 people vote the first day of early voting for the November Presidential election," said Harris. "By comparison, 200 is definitely a good turnout for a referendum."
In all, 211 local residents cast their ballots yesterday to determine the fate of the wheel tax.
"We've had a steady stream of voters, but nobody has had to wait in line," said Harris.
Election officials say they have also received 164 absentee ballots.
Early voting at the election commission office in the courthouse will continue through Oct. 31. Voting hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The election office will also be open from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturdays.
