Council to host health fair
From Staff Reports
The Carter County Health Council will be hosting
a community health fair for seniors this Saturday at the Elk
Mills Fire Hall.
Flu and pneumonia shots will be available to
seniors at a minimal charge and can be billed to Medicare
if participants are eligible.
Health Council Chairperson Dr. Joellen Edwards
said Wednesday that the fair has been organized to respond
to specific health needs within the community.
"We were especially concerned by high rates of
death from the flu and pneumonia," Edwards said.
Cholesterol screenings, lipid profiles, and blood
sugar tests will also be available. A small fee will be charged
for these evaluations also, but Council Member Art Webb, coordinator
for the event, said that a number of area churches have volunteered
to help offset the cost of screenings for those whose money
is limited.
Council members have also gathered information
on TennCare, meals on wheels, food stamps, and other assistance
programs for seniors.
Members say that preparing for the health fair
has taken a coordinated effort from various health agencies,
organizations, and individuals.
The health fair will be open from 10 .m.-2 p.m.
at the fire hall.
Anyone who has questions about the fair or who
needs travel assistance is asked to call Art Webb at 543-1451
or 543-5107.
