Farmers market will open downtown Sept. 1

A farmers market in Elizabethton? Yes, the Elizabethton Farmers Market will have its initial opening on Wednesday, Sept. 1, in the City Parking Lot on E Street next to Farm Supply.
The market will be open each Wednesday and Saturday through October 23 from 8 a.m. until 12 noon.
Sponsored by the Elizabethton Downtown Business Association, the farmers market will be open to vendors at no cost. Martha Mayo, who along with Pam Huber are getting the market started, said vendors are presently needed. "We need farmers to bring their crops. If they have extra produce, such as tomatoes, beans, pepper, corn, whatever, the market is a good way to dispose of it. It's a wonderful thing for people who have extra produce," she said.
Some vendors have already been contacted. Among them is a dealer with fresh bread, who will be at the twice-weekly market. "The market's possibilities are unlimited. Greens are coming on, pumpkins, apples, fall cabbage, sweet potatoes all are good products this time of the year," Mayo said.
"We hope we will have vendors with applebutter, honey and molasses, and herbs and plants as well as produce. I hope we have so many vendors and products that we will outgrow the parking lot and have to move to a larger place," she added.
Mayo said if the farmers market did well this fall, it would re-open next summer.
