Chamber of Commerce sets holiday activities

From Staff Reports
Although the new school year is just beginning, it's still not too early to begin thinking about the upcoming holiday season. The Holiday Activities Committee on Friday announced the dates and times for upcoming events.
Sprint will again be the major event sponsor.
Kick off to the holiday season will be the annual lighting of the Fraser fir located on the grounds of the UT Agriculture Extension office, 824 East Elk Ave. This community event will feature youth choirs, trumpeters, and other outstanding performances starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20. The evening will climax with the lighting of the magnificent Fraser fir at 6 p.m.
Santa Claus has marked his calendar to make a special visit to Elizabethton to take part in the Annual Christmas Parade hosted by the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce. This year's theme is "The Night Before Christmas." Bands, floats, marching units, beauty queens, beautiful cars, and many more colorful units will be highlighted as they come into view starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. This year, the organizers expect a good number of entries as there were 95 entries in last year's parade. Due to reconstruction work on the Elk Avenue bridge, the parade route is being reconsidered and will be announced at a later date. Entries will again this year be assessed a $10 entry fee, with the entire proceeds being donated to the Carter County Christmas Food Baskets program. Last year, the event raised more than $800 for this program. Applications may be picked up at the Chamber office, 500 Veterans Memorial Parkway. Deadline for entry is Wednesday, Nov. 19. No exceptions will be made for missing the deadline.
As always, following the Fraser fir lighting and the Christmas parade, participants and viewers are invited to visit local businesses and view the splendid decorations prepared for this season.
As an end to the holiday season, the Annual Chipping of the Green will take place at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Trees may be dropped off ahead of time at the park. Mulch will be available to take home if you bring your own bags. Participants are asked to remove all decorations from their trees before dropping them off.
