An Elizabethton teenager is recovering at Cincinnati Children's Hospital following a liver transplant.
Fourteen-year-old Anna Poston had been sick for about three weeks. About one and a half weeks ago, a local pediatrician referred the family to Cincinnati hospital, according to Anna's father, the Rev. Phil Poston, who serves as the pastor of First Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton.
Suffering from acute liver failure, Anna hung in a delicate balance between life and death for several days. "She's a miracle right now," Poston said. "When she got here, she was the sickest person in the hospital. She was number one in the nation to get a liver at that point."
Surgeons began the transplant surgery at approximately 3 a.m. last Sunday. Anna was in surgery for about 5-6 hours.
"They will be doing research on the liver they took out to try and find out why this happened, but there is not really a known cause right now," Poston said.
A global prayer effort on Anna's behalf is ongoing. "It's been out on email lists across the world," remarked Poston, who said he believes prayer will ultimately make the difference in his daughter's survival.
Friday was both a good day and a tiring day, according to Poston. He said Anna was able to get out bed for the first time in 10 days and was able to sit up in a chair for two hours. He said she will be leaving the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) as soon as a room is available.
The Poston family will be in Cincinnati for about another month and a half, according to Poston. The Postons are staying at the Ronald McDonald House. "It's a great thing," Poston said. "It's been a great help to us, and people from all over the world come to this one. The staff has been great. It's been wonderful."
Anna's Fund has been set up through the church to help with financial needs. Donations - earmarked for Anna's Fund - may be sent to First Free Will Baptist Church, 706 First Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
