County BOE prepares for Aug. 15 school start

Following the meeting of the Carter County School Board, Director of Schools Dallas Williams jokingly said he believed the board set a record for the quickest meeting. The meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. and adjourned 15 minutes later.
   Addressing a 15-item agenda, Williams announced that registration for Carter County schools will begin Aug. 13. The end to a seemingly short summer will come Aug. 15 when the first full day of school starts.
   In preparation for the school year, the board approved a low bid from Rick Holmes to re-paint school zone signs on area roads and highways. All 16 school zones will be coated. Holmes will also paint the 32 school warnings for $3,200.
   The board also approved a low bid from Hyder's Carpet of $5,667.69 for new tile at Central Elementary School.
   Board members complimented Williams for his work with County Finance Director Jason Cody in getting the schools' 2003-04 budget prepared and passed by the county commission. The commission passed the budget last Monday. "It is good to have a budget ready before school starts," Williams said.
   Board member, Steve Chambers, said, "The fact that he took time to send every member of the commission a letter pointing out the cuts that we have had over the last several years ... I just wanted to say that I appreciate it."
   "The morale of the school personnel is very high at this time," Board Member Jack Pearman added. Pearman stated the school's finance committee will meet Wednesday at 9 a.m.
