13-year-old boy and father dead in Unicoi County after apparent murder-suicide

From Staff Reports
ERWIN -- An apparent murder-suicide here involving a father and his 13-year-old son was the cause of death for two Unicoi County residents either late Sunday night or early Monday morning, according to authorities.
On Tuesday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers for the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department received a phone call regarding a shooting at the corner of Marbleton Road and Anderson Chapel Road. Upon arrival, they found the bodies of Michael Myers and his 13-year-old son. Both had died from fatal gunshot wounds to the head.
"In the preliminary investigation, the actual weapon was found in the father's hand," Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris said Tuesday evening.
Harris, who spoke to STAR reporters from his cell phone, did not immediately have the age and exact address for Myers' residence, where the incident occurred, or the name of his juvenile son.
Harris stated that a friend of Myers' ex-wife phoned officers, met them at the residence, and said that Myers' ex-wife found the bodies. The back door of the residence was unlocked, and police found Myers with the weapon in his hand, Harris said.
"He had made some threats, according to his ex-wife, that he was going to kill himself. He called Sunday to pick the boy up and take him fishing. She (the ex-wife) called late Monday night and nobody answered the phone. Instead of going to work (on Tuesday) she went straight by the residence," Harris said.
"It's a terrible situation; something you never want to see happen, especially involving a child. I just don't know why anyone would want to do that."
Harris said investigators will continue to search for a possible motive.
