Local meetings to address water quality

From Staff Reports

Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Division of Water Pollution Control has scheduled several public meetings throughout the state concerning its Draft 303(d) List for the year 2002, including one at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at Sycamore Shoals State Park, 1651 W. Elk Ave., and one at 2 p.m. Sept. 4 in the conference room of Kingsport Public Library, 400 Broad St., Kingsport. Those are the only two scheduled for this area. The division is willing, however, to hold additional meetings upon request.
The report identifies the amount of a pollutant in a stream, sources of the pollutant, and recommends actions that can be taken to clean up the pollution.
Following the end of the public participation phase, the division will prepare a formal response to comments received, and after revisions have been made, will submit the list to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for approval. EPA hopes to have the state lists finalized by Oct. 1. If comments by citizens are not resolved to their satisfaction by the divisions, concerns can be directed to EPA in Atlanta.
The 303(d) List may be downloaded from TDEC's home page at http://www.state.tn.us/environment. Or for more information contact Gregory.denton@state.tn.us. All written comments must be received by Sept. 1.
