Man dies after shooting

KINGSPORT -- A man who was shot by his father
died at a local hospital as a result of injuries sustained
in the shooting, and a judge has ordered the father to undergo
a psychiatric evaluation.
Delmer Dewayne Laughlin, 37, of Kingsport, died
after he being transported to Wellmont Holston Valley hospital
on Sunday following the shooting.
Laughlin's father, 63-year-old Delmer H. Laughlin,
of Ford Town Road, has been charged with second degree murder
in the death of his own son and also with attempted second
degree murder in the shooting of his son's girlfriend, 32-year-old
Mary Carla Clark. According to information from the Sullivan
County Sheriff's Office, Clark is currently listed in critical
condition at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital.
Delmer H. Laughlin appeared in Sullivan County
General Sessions Court on Monday and was ordered to be held
without bond pending the completion of a mental evaluation,
according to information from the SCSO.
The shooting happened just before 9 a.m. on Sunday
at Delmer Laughlin's home on Ford Town Road.
Laughlin reportedly called authorities after he
shot his son and Clark and told police what happened.
Delmer Dewayne Laughlin was shot in the abdomen
while Clark sustained gunshot wounds to her left shoulder
and knee. According to reports, both had been shot with a
12-gauge shotgun.
Investigators believe the shootings may have been
spurred by an argument.
