CCSD investigating alleged neglect of elderly woman

From Staff Reports

Charges are pending against two Elizabethton men after deputies of the Carter County Sheriff's Department found an 80-year-old elderly woman covered in feces and maggots when responding to a call of a neglected person Monday night.
CCSD Sgt. Keith Range reported Helen Pearce was found lying in the living room floor of her 118 Cunningham St. residence covered in "flies and maggots as well as feces and urine". Pearce also had sores on her feet and was unable to walk, according to the report by Range.
Range described the living conditions of the residence as "deplorable". Pearce told police her grandson Loren Pearce took care of her. CCSD Investigator Laverne Julian was summoned to the scene to investigate Helen Pearce's condition.
Witnesses told police that Loren Pearce had fled the residence prior to the deputies' arrival. He was located a short time later by deputies. Loren Pearce, age 26 and Earl J. Johnson, 48, both of the residence were arrested on a charge of public intoxication. Deputies reported finding no food in the residence but found a large quantity of beer in the refrigerator. Helen Pearce was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital for treatment.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court June 21 while Loren Pearce is scheduled to appear July 21 on the public intoxication charge. Police said Tuesday night additional charges were pending in the case.
