A Tuesday morning traffic accident involving two vehicles that occurred in the Hampton community left one passenger injured while the driver of the other car was taken into police custody at the scene.
Stephen B. Pritchard, 35, 117 Jade Drive, was arrested by Carter County Sheriff's Department Deputy Kevin Cable and charged with eighth offense driving on a revoked license and violation of the financial responsibility law.
According to reports, Pritchard was driving on U.S. Highway 321/State Route 67 in the Hampton community when the car in front of him began to make a right turn. The other vehicle, driven by Shelia M. Hartley, 38, of 168 1/2 Hallborough Drive, Jonesborough, was attempting to turn onto a private lot when it was hit by Pritchard's vehicle, Cable stated in the accident report. The collision occurred near the intersection of U.S. Highway 321/State Route 67 and Johnny Lewis Road, in front of Hampton Auto Parts.
Officers who responded spoke to witnesses on the scene. "(Pritchard) did not observe (Hartley's vehicle) turning quickly enough and swerved off the roadway onto the shoulder, striking (Hartley's vehicle) in the right rear fender," the accident report states.
The passenger in Hartley's car, Gregory E. Hartley, 41, of Hudson, N.C., was injured in the accident. He was transported by the Carter County Rescue Squad to the Johnson City Medical Hospital for treatment of a neck injury. Further information on his condition was unavailable Tuesday evening.
Pritchard, Hartley and Roy P. Hyder, 27, 462 Minton Hollow Road, who was a passenger in Pritchard's car, all escaped injury in the accident. The vehicle Pritchard was driving was damaged in the accident and had to be towed from the scene.
Pritchard is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court to answer the charges of eighth offense driving on a revoked license and violation of the financial responsibility law on June 22.
