Man charged with assault stemming from incident involving his son, another child

From Staff Reports

A 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault late Tuesday night after an altercation that occurred earlier that evening at Unaka Elementary School.
According to reports, Carl Lane Pierce, 114 Lincoln Drive, was arrested by Carter County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Patrick Johnson and charged in an incident where he allegedly struck another man.
Pierce told the officer that his son had been involved in an altercation with one of his teammates while they were at the school. During the altercation, "he perceived that the other child's father was reaching for and going to grab his son," according to a report by Johnson. "At this point, (Pierce) stated that he 'lost it' and struck the other party."
When Johnson spoke with the victim and several witnesses, they reported to him that the victim had not approached Mr. Pierce's son and that Mr. Pierce's son was actually in his vehicle when the assault took place.
"All witnesses advised that Mr. Pierce had become enraged when told that his son had kicked the victim's child, and after sending his son to the vehicle had began challenging (the victim) and assaulted him, striking him in the right eye and causing a large bruise and swelling," the report states. "According to all witnesses present the victim tried to avoid the altercation and refused to fight back."
After the officer spoke with both parties involved and several witnesses, he took out warrants charging Pierce with assault and arrested him later that night.
