An Elizabethton man charged with rape of a female
child in 1998, but not convicted, was charged Saturday with
the rape of an adult female following an incident in Roan
Mountain.
According to Carter County Sheriff's Department
Investigator Sgt. George Skeans, the victim stated that a
male subject, identified as George W. Greene Jr., 35, 822
Walnut St., had asked her to give him a ride from Johnson
City to Days' Inn Motel, 505 W. Elk Ave. The victim agreed
after her brother also asked her to give Greene a ride.
Upon arriving at Day's Inn, the victim said Greene
could not find the key to his motel room and asked her whether
she would give him a ride to Roan Mountain if he put gasoline
in her car. She agreed and drove to Tiger Creek Road, across
Ripshin Mountain and back out onto U.S. Highway 19E near White
Way Grill. The victim was then directed to go to the Appco
station where gasoline was purchased for the vehicle.
According to the report, after leaving the Appco,
the victim said she was directed back onto Ripshin Mountain
Road, where Greene said she could drop him off at his campsite.
They traveled down a gravel road to Peters Cemetery, after
which Greene refused to get out of the vehicle. The victim
said he grabbed the keys from the ignition and ordered her
to perform oral sex, which she refused. He then allegedly
forced her to perform sexual acts and threatened to kill her,
her parents, and her brother if she reported the incident,
according to the report.
Greene was arrested Saturday and his bond set
at $25,000. It was reduced to $5,000 Monday in General Sessions
Court and a no-contact order issued. Greene was still being
held Thursday afternoon in Carter County Jail.
On April 1, 1998, Greene was arrested following
investigation by Sgt. Randy Bowers and charged with two counts
of rape and one count of incest. The victim told the officer
that she and Greene traveled to Rasnick Hollow on a bicycle
and walked into the woods. According to the victim, Greene
-- a relative -- handcuffed her hands behind her back, blindfolded
her with a shirt, then had sex with her and made her perform
oral sex.
The victim was transported to Sycamore Shoals
Hospital after telling her mother about the incident the following
day. A test was performed and sperm detected. The victim also
had red marks on each wrist and scratches on her lower back.
Charges against Greene were dismissed after the
victim recanted her story just before going to trial, according
to the sheriff's department. Jail records indicate Greene
was arrested on the rape charges about two weeks after he
was released from prison.
He was convicted in March 12, 1990, in Sullivan
County of two counts of contributing to the delinquency of
a minor; assault and resisting arrest on July 9, 1990, in
General Sessions Court in Bristol; escape, July 25, 1990,
in General Sessions Court in Bristol; possession of legend
drugs in jail following a Sept. 29, 1990 charge; and theft
over $1,000 on Dec. 14, 1994, in Sullivan County Criminal
Court.
