Petition deadline today for county election

   All last-minute qualifying petitions for the Aug. 1 General Election in Carter County must be in to the Election Commission Office by noon today.
   "12:01 is too late," according to an office member.
   The commission also announced that Friday is the first day to pick up qualifying papers for the city election, which will be held Nov. 5.
   Four city council members and two board of education representatives will be selected.
   Applicants must be registered voters in the City of Elizabethton.
   Deadline for qualifying papers in the city election is Aug. 15.
