KINGSPORT -- Happy Valley's Matt Dalton was just too tough to tame in the 24th annual Times-News Relays held on Friday at Sullivan North.
With a jump of 12-6, Dalton easily won the boys high-jump event as the next best competitor finished with an 11-0.
One of Dalton's Warrior teammates, David Hughes, held his own in the boys distance runs.
Hughes took second place in the 3,200 (9:54.4), finishing three seconds behind Ross Lewis (9:51.1) of Morristown East, and posted a third-place finish in the 1,600 (4:35.7).
Elizabethton had a few noteworthy performances, led by Tara Benfield's second-place effort (34-3 1/2) in the girls shot put.
Lester Bailey's third-place showing (11.0) in the 100 meters stood out among the Cyclone boys.
Whitman Brown took fourth (16.7) for the Cyclones in the 100-meter hurdles, while Andrew Presnell came in fourth in the discus with a 139-7.
The Cyclones placed third in both the boys 4x100 and 4x200 relays, while Megan Pearce (5:47) finished sixth in the girls 1,600 meters.
Dobyns-Bennett's Morgan Hyatt, who lives in Elizabethton, performed superbly to gain the Krista Hale Award (Most Outstanding Female in Field Events).
Hyatt was tops in the shot put (39-2 1/4) and discus (122-6) events.
