Woman, grandchildren escape accident without serious injury

From Staff Reports

A 50-year-old woman and her two grandchildren sustained only minor injuries after the vehicle the woman was driving on the Bristol Highway ran off the roadway and flipped Wednesday morning.
Mary Ruth Tolley, 1900 Bristol Highway, was driving toward Elizabethton when she apparently fell asleep and ran off the roadway, according to Carter County Sheriff's Department Deputy Rick Taylor. "Then the vehicle struck a culvert and the vehicle flipped," Taylor said, adding that after the vehicle flipped, it came to rest across a creek.
Two children, ages seven and 10, were riding in the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Tolley, their grandmother. All three were transported to the Johnson City Medical Center by members of the Carter County Rescue Squad, Taylor said.
According to Taylor, none was seriously injured. "They were all wearing their seatbelts and the airbags deployed in the Jeep," he said.
