Fisherman finds body of male floating in Watauga River

From Staff Reports

A man fishing on the Watauga River near Sycamore Shoals Drive in Elizabethton on Sunday afternoon found the body of an unidentified black male floating in the water, according to Carter County Sheriff's Department officials.
At approximately 1:36 p.m. the man contacted the Carter County Sheriff's Department. At press time, an officer with the sheriff's department said the name of the fisherman who found the body was not being released.
The finding follows a similar incident of another body that was found in the river in Boone, N.C. last Wednesday and that was identified as that of 39-year-old Johnny Kurt Hartmon, of Butler. The officer at the sheriff's department said it is not known if the two incidents are connected.
Sheriff's department officials identified the body as that of a black male possibly in his early 30's who is approximately six-feet-one-inch tall and weighs about 200 pounds. According to officials, the man was wearing a tee-shirt, wind pants, and a jacket, and also had a 1-inch scar on his left rib cage.
The sheriff's department is continuing an investigation into the incident. The body was taken to the Quillen College of Medicine for identification.
