Local man charged in connection with J.C. stabbing

From Staff Reports

JOHNSON CITY -- An Elizabethton man turned himself in to Washington County law enforcement officers Tuesday afternoon in connection with the stabbing of a 69-year-old man late Sunday night.
Norman Kyle Lewis, 46, of A Street, has been arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder in connection with an incident that left Wayne I. Birchfield, 1168 Bailey's Bridge Road, Limestone, with a knife wound to the neck.
Birchfield was transported to the Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, where he remained in stable condition Tuesday, according to a report from the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said Birchfield was cut from ear to ear by a man that he considered to be his friend. Birchfield reported to officers that he had no idea why his friend would have cut his throat.
Birchfield told police he and Lewis had been spending time together on Sunday night, and when Lewis was getting up to leave, he walked behind Birchfield's chair and pulled out a knife and cut his throat.
Birchfield then pursued his attacker to a neighbor's house where the neighbor called 911.
Lewis is currently being held in the Washington County Detention Center without bond. He is scheduled to appear in Washington County General Sessions Court April 3.
