Crowe, Cole seek to honor fallen hero

From Staff Reports

NASHVILLE -- Sen. Rusty Crowe, Chairman, Joint Select Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and Rep. Ralph Cole, Joint Select Committee on Veterans' Affairs, have worked together to pass legislation in the General Assembly to honor a fallen hero from Carter County
The two veteran legislators have been working with the Carter County Commission to designate the bridge spanning the beautiful Watauga River on State Route 400 South as the Master Sergeant Jefferson Donald "Donnie" Davis Memorial Bridge.
"Master Sgt. Donnie Davis of Watauga gave his life on a foreign field of war while serving his country in the distant mountains of Afghanistan halfway around the world from the mountains of his birthplace and home in East Tennessee. It is altogether fitting and proper that we designate this bridge over the beautiful Watauga in his honor to be a continual reminder to us of his service," said Rep. Cole.
This week Sen. Crowe and Rep. Cole proudly unanimously passed Senate Joint Resolution 529 to name the bridge in honor of Master Sgt. Davis.
"I am reminded now of the famous address given by President Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg," said Sen. Crowe. "And, if I may borrow from and adapt those most eloquent words he spoke, it now remains for us the living to dedicate ourselves to the unfinished work which those faithful warriors like Master Sgt. Davis so nobly advanced in Operation Enduring Freedom.
"It is also appropriate for us to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us in the continuing War on Terrorism -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that nations like Afghanistan shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth," Crowe said.
"I would hope that thoughts like these would be on our minds every time we drive across this bridge and see his name. Master Sgt. Donnie Davis cared more about the purpose of liberty and freedom for us all than he did his own life," said Crowe.
Sen. Crowe represents the 3rd Senatorial District comprised of Carter, Johnson and Washington counties. Rep. Cole represents the 4th House District comprised of Carter County.
