ETSU student dies after apparent
fall

JOHNSON CITY -- A 22-year-old East Tennessee
State University student died early Friday morning after apparently
falling from a second-store balcony at Buccaneer Ridge Apartments,
H-329.
According to Kristen Fry, University Relations,
ETSU Public Safety Officer Chad Proffitt responded to a panic
alarm at Building H around 1:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, the officer found the body of student
James Robert Nottingham of Kingsport lying on the sidewalk
in a pool of blood. The officer noted severe head trauma to
the body and could detect no breathing or pulse. Emergency
Medical Service personnel arrived and pronounced Nottingham
dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation by ETSU Public Safety
determined the student died from injuries sustained after
apparently falling from the balcony of the apartment building.
The body was taken to ETSU's James H. Quillen College of Medicine
for autopsy.
Fry said there were no witnesses. Further information
was unavailable.
Nottingham was a member of the ROTC program at
ETSU and was a graduate of the Airborne School at Fort Benning,
Ga.
