Home ownership classes to be taught in Roan Mountain

From Staff Reports

The nonprofit organization that held a successful home ownership workshop in Elizabethton earlier this month is now offering similar education to Roan Mountain residents. The Eastern Eight Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit housing and development organization affiliated with East Tennessee State University, will offer valuable information to Roan Mountain residents looking to buy their own homes.
Participants will be provided with the tools necessary for the purchase and retention of their homes. The class will offer valuable information on budgeting, the mortgage process, credit and credit rehab, as well as foreclosure prevention. Potential homeowners involved in the workshop will receive a five-chapter guidebook that outlines this information.
The training is designed to empower citizens to get their credit in order and prepare them to deal with future credit problems should they arise. Eastern Eight uses its connections with lending institutions to find the lowest possible interest rates for low-income families.
There are two parcels of land in Elizabethton that are owned by the Eastern Eight Development Corporation. The properties will be available to qualified households who attend the training workshop.
The Home ownership Training Program was developed from focus group participants, and support from lending and real estate professionals. There is a fee of $15 per household that is waived for Family First participants and graduation certificates are given to families upon completion of the course. Families with course completion certificates will be eligible for low interest financing.
The workshops will be held Tuesdays, March 19 and 26, at the Carter County Bank in Roan Mountain from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All interested parties may pre-register for the workshops by calling 772-3223.
