Barnett, 26, 1716 King Springs Road, Johnson City, died at Johnson City Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit from massive head and chest injuries received in the accident.
When the accident occurred, a passenger in Barnett's vehicle, Keith McKeehan, 31, 377 Rockhouse Road, Johnson City, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington County Deputy Coroner.
According to police reports, officers responded about 3:13 a.m. Saturday to the 1600 block of King Springs Road to a traffic accident. Officers found that a 1998 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on King Springs Road at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control in a curve at Stoneybrook Drive.
The Jeep crossed over the center line into the westbound lane and struck a dune buggy head-on. McKeehan died at the scene. Barnett, driver of the dune buggy, was critically injured and was transported to Johnson City Medical Center.
The driver of the Jeep, Robert Keith Lilley, 29, PSC Box 1514, Little Rock Air Force Base, Little Rock, Ark., formerly of 456 Dalewood Drive, Johnson City, was not injured. He was arrested and charged at the time with one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault.
Following Barnett's death, Lilley was charged with another count of vehicular homicide. He was released to Marine Corps authorities after being arraigned Monday in General Sessions Court.
A passenger in the Jeep, Jason Lilley, was unharmed in the accident.
Police determined that alcohol and speeding were contributing factors in the accident.
