Approaching deadline for voter registration

   The deadline for voter registration for the upcoming election is July 1, 2002. The Carter County Election Commission urges members of the public to pick up voter registration forms at various public offices around the county.
   Voter registration forms can be picked up at the Election Commission's office on the second floor of the Carter County Courthouse on Elk Ave. Voter registration forms are also available at the Housing, Safety, and Health Departments and Public Library.
   The voting procedure for this August's election are the same as in the past. Most of the 21 precincts in Carter County are at the schools. Hunter and Unaka Elementary are two of the schools that will be housing voting machines this fall. The Election Commission will be using the same micro vote machines that it has in past elections.
   There are currently no candidates for Carter County Constable for the 7th district while the 8th district has only one candidate that has completed filing requirements. A seat on the Carter County School Board from the 5th district is also open with no candidates and the 7th district has only one candidate running uncontested.
   Any member of the public interested in running for office will have to file their papers with the Election Commission before 12 p.m., May 16, 2002. Other local offices where candidates are currently running uncontested are County Clerk, County Trustee, and County Commissioner from the 8th district.
