Cochran named to new committee

From Staff Reports

State Rep. Jerome Cochran, R-Elizabethton, has been named to the newly formed Joint Ad Hoc Committee on issues involving alcohol and citizen responsibilities. The committee will address and review all DUI bills filed during this session of the Tennessee Legislature.
"I am honored to be named to this important new committee," said Rep. Cochran. "Improving our state's DUI laws is one of my priorities in the Tennessee General Assembly."
The committee also includes Republican State Representatives Chris Newton, R-Benton, and Tom DuBois, R-Columbia. Committee members will attempt to create a single piece of legislation from the dozens of DUI bills filed annually.
A significant challenge for the group will be establishing what penalties the state can afford to increase because of the costs that increased incarceration bring.
"I support good, sound, responsible legislation to strengthen our DUI statutes," added Cochran. "We must do everything we can to stop this ever-present danger to the public."
Cochran is also a member of the House Judiciary and Transportation committees.
