Early voting ends Feb. 5

From Staff Reports

The Elizabethton Star and Carter County Election Commission office have produced an information sample ballot on Page 3 to assist voters when they go to the polls in the presidential and county primaries on Feb. 10.
The Presidential Preference Primary gives voters across the state the opportunity to vote for the Republican nominee, President George W. Bush, or seven remaining candidates seeking the Democratic nomination.
Locally, the option of increasing the county sales tax from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent will be in the hands of Carter County voters. A countywide referendum asking voters to vote for or against the tax is on the ballot.
Voters will also choose the Republican nominee for the county Assessor of Property's office from three candidates: George Fortner, Gerald Holly and Ted Weaver. The county Democratic Party did not hold a primary to select a candidate to run for the assessor's office in the county general election in August.
