Four sought in beatings, detention center escape

JOHNSON CITY -- Four persons who escaped Sunday from the Upper East Tennessee Regional Juvenile Detention Center were still at large Monday. The four included three juveniles and an adult. Police identified the adult as David Allen Gregg, Bristol, who had turned 18 while he was in custody at the detention center. All four of the escapees are white males.
All four are charged with one count each of aggravated robbery, theft over $5,000 and escape. Gregg is charged with two counts of simple assault.
According to Washington County 911, the escapees were spotted late Monday by Kingsport police traveling south on Interstate 81 in a black Nissan Altima.
The four are accused of punching two guards -- a man and a woman -- in the face and struck one in the side of the head near the eye. After they had locked the guards in a room, the four took about $30 and the keys to a Ford Explorer, which belongs to the detention center.
The escapees are from Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol and Unicoi, and they had been detained on some "serious charges" said officials at the detention center.
