A second person has been arrested in connection with a shooting
that occurred Friday afternoon in Roan Mountain.
Tony Allen Hughes, 41, 279 Teaberry Rd., Roan Mountain, was
arrested Monday afternoon by Tennessee Constable Jerry Miller
on a warrant charging him with aggravated assault taken out
by Carter County Sheriff's Department Investigator Todd Hamm.
According to reports, investigators with the Carter County
Sheriff's Department responded to the Doe River Trading Post
at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon to investigate
a reported assault that occurred in the Roan Mountain area
earlier in the day.
Hamm spoke with Eric Street, 25, of 4060 U.S. Highway 19E,
who said he and a friend identified as David Shepherd were
traveling north on U.S. Highway 19-E in Roan Mountain when
he noticed a car following them and flashing its headlights.
Street told Hamm that, when he pulled over to determine why
the vehicle was following them, a man later identified as
Hughes got out of the car and assaulted him.
Street said he struck Hughes to defend himself, and a woman
he identified as Billie Jean Odom then got out of the second
car and allegedly pointed a gun at him. He told police Odom
laughed and said to him "Eric, look what I got" then allegedly
fired one shot at him. Street said he ran back to his car
and drove away.
After he left the scene, Street said he noticed the left side
of his body was hurting from the assault. Police and paramedics
determined Street sustained a one-inch wound that looked like
a stab wound, according to the police report.
Carter County Rescue Squad paramedics treated Street at the
scene. He was transported to the Johnson City Medical Center
Hospital by Wings Air Rescue. Investigators spoke with witnesses
afterward.
Hamm took out warrants charging both Hughes and Odom with
aggravated assault on Friday.
Odom was taken into custody early Saturday morning and held
at the Carter County Jail where she was released on bond later
that day. She is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court
on Jan. 30.
Hughes was taken into custody at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Monday and transported to the Carter County Jail. He is scheduled
to appear in General Sessions Court on Feb. 3.
