An Elizabethton woman has been charged with aggravated assault following an alleged shooting incident in Roan Mountain on Friday afternoon.
Billie Jean Odom, 34, 279 Teaberry Road, was arrested without incident at 1:18 a.m. Saturday morning by Carter County Sheriff's Department Deputy Kevin Cable and charged with aggravated assault for her alleged role in an assault reported to police by Eric Street, 25, of Johnson City.
Investigators with the Carter County Sheriff's Department responded to the Doe River Trading Post at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon to investigate a reported assault that had occurred in the Roan Mountain area earlier in the day.
Investigator Todd Hamm spoke with Eric Street, 25, of Elizabethton who stated he and a friend identified as David Shepherd were traveling north on U.S. Highway 19-E in Roan Mountain when he noticed a vehicle following them and flashing its headlights. Street stated to Hamm that when he pulled over to determine why the vehicle was following them a male subject emerged from the vehicle and began assaulting him.
When the assault began, Street said he struck the male subject to defend himself. While the assault was occurring, Street said a woman he identified as Odom emerged from second vehicle and allegedly pointed a gun at him. He told police that Odom laughed and said to him "Eric, look what I got" and allegedly fired one shot at him. Street reported that he fled back to his vehicle and drove away.
After leaving the scene, Street said he noticed a pain in the left side of his body where he had been struck. Police and paramedics determined Street had sustained a 1-inch wound, which appeared to be a stab wound, according to the police report.
Street was treated at the scene by paramedics of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He was transported to Johnson City Medical Center Hospital by Wings Air Rescue. Investigators reported later speaking with witnesses of the assault.
Hamm issued the warrant charging Odom with aggravated assault on Friday. She was taken to Carter County Jail and later released on bond. She is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on Jan. 30.
