Two county residents were arrested Sunday afternoon after
placing harassing telephone calls to Carter County 911 Communications
Center dispatchers asking them out on dates.
Carter County Police Department officers arrested Rigoberto
Mendez Cruz, 33, and Candido Mendez Cruz, 26, both of 127
Emerald Point, and charged them with telephone harassment.
According to police reports by CCSD Sgt. Tim Lowe and Deputy
Kenny Cornett, 911 dispatchers told police that, in a span
of approximately 30 minutes, Rigoberto Cruz and Candido Cruz
had placed 15 to 20 telephone calls to the dispatchers asking
them for dates.
When police arrived at the address, the two men were intoxicated
and had limited English speaking skills.
Police called 911 to confirm the telephone number at the residence
on Emerald Point was the same number used to make the calls.
The two men were arrested after police received confirmation.
"The calls were made in an offensively repetitious manner
for no legitimate purpose," the police report said. "Both
Candido and Rigoberto were then arrested for telephone harassment
with the belief that unless action was taken the calls would
continue."
Candido Cruz was also served an outstanding capias charging
him with failure to appear in court.
